The web log I started in New York on 4 May 2004 has morphed into the series of Nowhere Confidential reports from Las Vegas.
The old entries are presented here as a matter of purely historical interest:
The last entry, undated but from some time in October of 2004, reflects the madness of the season as the move began:
The grand scheme to ship my books to Las Vegas in a rented truck driven by Jae collapsed twenty four hours before departure
when it occurred to us to calculate the weight of the books in light of the load-bearing capacity of the vehicle.
The results were shocking. I have almost five tons of books -- the truck could safely carry a ton and a half. My brother-in-law's
brother, who is a professional long-haul trucker, said that an overload of that magnitude could cause the front wheels of
the truck to lose secure contact with the road. It seemed wise suddenly to rethink the plan.
It now looks as though all the stuff will go out with a professional moving company, which has required a furious rush
to get everything packed now and ready to leave at a moment's notice. Jae and my sister Libba have done heroic work in the
emergency and yesterday two art packers came over and crated the marble top of my antique buffet and a 19th-Century oil painting
handed down to me by my grandmother Nanny, of beloved memory.
Within a day or two it should all be done. I'm still trying to nail down a professional mover and a moving date, and then
a closing date for the loft sale.
The stress is awesome but I'm starting to feel for the first time that it's all going happen.
The adventure continues!
